Green policy

Portsmouth International Port is totally committed to reducing pollution and conserving natural resources – and to showing other ports how they can do the same.

‘Green’ initiatives are at the heart of the Port’s new £16.5 million passenger terminal development. Among its groundbreaking ideas are natural air-conditioning provided by ‘windcatchers’ on the roof and toilets flushed with seawater.

The whole terminal has been designed to pioneer eco-friendly technology and is the first building in Britain to use thermal energy from the sea for heating and cooling  – slashing energy consumption for these by 80%.

The Port has won the prestigious international environmental ISO 14001 award recognising its ‘green’ vision and is now working towards a coveted BREEAM award, setting the standard for best practice in sustainable design.

Port Technology International magazine recently devoted a full report to the Port’s environmental policy.

'It is part of Portsmouth Port’s ethos to build to the best standards it can afford, and it has pioneered innovative measures that other ports are expected to benefit from in the future,' it said.
