Tempting treats for Mother's Day
22 Feb 2012
It’s Mother’s Day on 18 March and if you’re looking for a more original gift than a bunch of flowers or box of chocolates this year, a short break from Portsmouth International Port could be just the ticket.
In fact, instead of a bouquet why not opt for a whole island of flowers and book a trip to Jersey for the annual June in Bloom festival? This is a wonderful chance to revel in the beautiful colours and heady scents of the Floral Island.
Mums will enjoy lavender fields, tours of private gardens, walks with local botanists, orchid meadows, stunning coastal views and St Helier’s buzzing flower market. This year’s festival runs from Sunday 17 – Sunday 24 June. Celebrations culminate in the Samarès Summer Festival and Jersey Rose Show, but music, art and poetry are all part of the mix. Sail from Portsmouth to Jersey with Condor Ferries.
For a superstar mum, what about a captivating cruise? There are some appealing possibilities from Portsmouth International Port, including round-Britain adventures from the Scilly Isles to the Outer Hebrides and cruises themed to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
Other cruise options range from the Canaries to the Norwegian fjords, each an enticing combination of relaxation and discovery. Portsmouth has a full cruise programme of amazing destinations aboard sumptuous liners. Click here to find out more.
A variation on a box of chocolates might be a trip to Paris to taste the finest creations of an expert chocolatier, drink molten chocolate nirvana at the famed Angelina’s tearooms and pick from an eye-popping selection of cakes at any number of patisseries. Sail to Le Havre with LD Lines or Caen with Brittany ferries and Paris is little more than two hours’ drive away.
Another option could be a stay at a French or Spanish cookery school with expert guidance on delicious desserts. An indulgent spa break could make a change from a Mother’s Day gift of bubble bath and scented candles. Mums might love a wine-wrap spa in the Bordeaux region or a luxury hotel break in northern Spain or the Pyrenees. Sail to Bilbao or Santander with Brittany ferries for convenient travel to Spain’s northern coast, the Basque Country and southwest France.
Portsmouth International Port is Britain’s best-connected ferry and cruise port with easy access and more destinations than any other.
