Passengers leaving Portsmouth International Port this winter may very well find themselves skating on thin ice, and having lots of festive fun, in the run up to Christmas.
A huge real ice rink opens this month outside the magnificent Guildhall building in Portsmouth City Centre. The attraction is just a few minutes’ drive from the passenger terminal and is open seven days a week from mid-morning to late at night. That means there’s a skate session that can be perfectly timed with most day and evening sailings.
The 646 square metre rink welcomes its first skaters on Saturday 18th November and closes for business on January 2nd. In between it’s hoped that thousands of skaters will enjoy gliding around on the ice on crisp winter days, and below twinkling lights at night.
There is an Alpine Cafe Bar for non-skaters to watch the fun, and for skaters to relax in after a session on the rink. All can enjoy the atmosphere of this authentic alpine chalet, with mulled wine and hot chocolate just two of the seasonal treats on the menu.
The ice rink in Guildhall Square is operated by SKATE, a company that has successfully run temporary ice rinks in towns and cities all over the UK. Sessions can be booked in advance, to guarantee getting the exact time that ties in with your ferry crossing.
Portsmouth, of course, is the prefect destination for a pre-Christmas visit. In addition to the festive ice rink there is a three day Victorian Festival of Christmas at the historic Dockyard starting on December 1st. Gunwharf Quays is promising shoppers the chance to visited Enchanted Narnia throughout December, with a much loved Christmas Market each day that month in Portsmouth’s Commercial Road.
