Jersey
Once you arrive from your ferry crossing to Jersey, you are on the edge of a whole island waiting to be explored. Jersey boasts beautiful unspoilt landscapes, as well as a rich culture and history to indulge in while you’re there.
Once you are at Jersey Ferry Port, you are right in the midst of the island’s capital city, St Hellier. You can choose to stay in the city centre or head out to the beautiful landscapes that make Jersey such a varied island.
Surrounded on all sides by the sea, seafood is plentiful in Jersey. Mussels and oysters are farmed on the south-east coast, and the Fish Market between Minden Place and Beresford Street sells an amazing variety of fish and shellfish. Stallholders will sometimes let you behind the stall to see the live crabs and lobsters in the tanks. Definitely worth a visit, especially with children if they haven't seen them before.
Jersey has so much to offer a family, and with such easy access by car ferry from Portsmouth Port, it can’t be bypassed. With the convenience of your own car, you can check out the hot spots at your own leisure.
What’s easily accessible?
• A return ferry crossing back to Portsmouth Port takes just 8 hours
• Saint Martin is just down the A6, with St Clements a short drive down the A5.
Jersey’s worst kept secrets
• One of its more unusual attractions is a snailarium, a home for endangered snails. Snails, as well as other creatures at the zoo, can be adopted by members of the public in return for a financial donation towards their welfare
• Corbière Lighthouse, one of Jersey's most recognisable and photographed spots
• Es Ecrehous, a granite reef six miles off the north-east coast
• You have to go and wander on the white sand at St Ouen's Bay
• A short drive south from the airport, St Brelade’s Bay is a vast tray of sand where the waves come right up to your hotel, then retreat leaving a vast beach that’s neat and spotless
• For a treat, there are best-frock restaurants like Suma's in Gorey and Bohemia, an excellent Michelin-starred restaurant that's part of designer hotel, The Club.
• The Pottery and Belvedere Terrace, St Aubin's Inner Road, St. Helier is another fantastic creative hotspot to take the family and get your hands dirty
• There are some beautiful gardens to visit, including the Shell Garden in St Brelade, created with millions of shells to Reg’s Garden in St Brelade which is a beautifully landscaped garden to relax in
• Jersey War Tunnels is a permanent reminder of the German Occupation of Jersey, which lasted almost five years until the island's liberation on 9th May 1945. The tunnel complex, formerly known as Höhlgangsanlage 8 (Ho8), now plays host to a series of galleries detailing Occupation history through the diverse experiences of those who lived through it.
