USE OF ESCORT TUG FOR CRUDE OIL TANKERS OVER 60,000 TONNES DEADWEIGHT BOUND TO OR FROM THE ESSO MARINE TERMINAL, FAWLEY.
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that Crude Oil Tankers of over 60,000 tonnes dead-weight tonnage bound to or from the Esso Marine Terminal at Fawley are required to be accompanied during their passage by the escort tug THRAX or SILEX.
If weather conditions permit, the escort tug may secure a towing wire to the stern of the tanker and in the event of a steering gear failure assist the tanker to reduce speed and/or to manoeuvre.
When secured to the tanker, the escort tug will display in addition to her normal steaming lights, the appropriate shapes and lights required by Rule 24(a) and Rule 27(b) of the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea 1972.
Navigators of small vessels including recreational craft are to exercise extreme caution when passing round the stern of a large tanker and are not to pass between the tanker and its escorting tug.
