MITIGATION OF WASH EFFECTS FOR FERRIES ALONGSIDE AT RYDE PIER

  1. NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the following measures to mitigate the effects of wash on vessels alongside at Ryde Pier Head, from vessels transiting the Solent within the Dockyard Port of Portsmouth are effective immediately.
  2. BACKGROUND

  3. The North end of Ryde Pier (50 deg 44.4 N 001 deg 10.4 W) is used by FastCat Ferry Services from Portsmouth to embark and disembark passengers. The effects of wash from vessels transiting the Solent, north of the pier can cause dangerous movement of these ferries whilst alongside the pier.
  4. MEASURES TO BE TAKEN

  5. All vessels, when transiting the Solent inbound or outbound, in the area between a line running North/South from the Motherbank Buoy (50 deg 45.5 N 001 deg 11.2 W) and North/South from No Man’s Fort (50 deg 44.4 N 001 deg 05.7 W), must take all reasonable measures to reduce to a minimum the effects of their wash on ferries berthed at Ryde Pier.

  6. These measures will include, but not be limited to, an appropriate reduction of speed and, if applicable, an alteration of course to give the pier a wider berth, if passage through the area will coincide with a ferry being alongside the pier.

  7. To facilitate passage planning, the following data may be useful:- Ferries can be expected to be alongside the pier at the following times:

Two Vessel Service – 0530 to 2215 daily
Alongside 0000 to 0015 and 0030 to 0045 minutes past each hour
One Vessel Service – 2215 to 0530 daily
Times alongside can be variable throughout this period

These times are approximate and are subject to change and should be checked on approach to the area.

  8. Cancel Portsmouth Notice to mariners 51/05.
