From 16th March 2005, passengers travelling from Portsmouth, Britain's best-connected ferry port, will benefit from a brand new high-speed ferry service - whisking them to the continent in double quick time. The new high-speed crossings to Cherbourg and Caen will be operated by Brittany Ferries' state-of-the-art craft, Normandie Express. Able to carry 900 passengers and 280 cars, she will be the largest of her type on the Channel. From March to November, she will offer up to two return sailings a day to Cherbourg and one daily round trip to Caen, crossing the channel in 180 minutes and 225 minutes respectively. Commenting on the introduction of the new service, port manager, Martin Putman, said: "With our hectic lives and busy work schedules, more and more people are opting for short breaks as well as longer traditional two-week holidays. The high-speed service makes the continent far more accessible. Holidaymakers can spend less time travelling and still enjoy the advantages of taking their cars, giving them freedom to explore their destinations as well as the opportunity to load up on all the French goodies they may want to take home. This news confirms Brittany Ferries' commitment to operating out of Portsmouth and to providing its passengers with a variety of travel choices." An additional daily conventional return crossing to Cherbourg will also start in March. This service will be provided by Brittany Ferries' classic cruise ferry, Barfleur.
