Save on Easter family breaks from Portsmouth International Port

It’s not too late to book an Easter break to France from Portsmouth International Port, and with a “kids sail free deal” Brittany Ferries is making it even more affordable.

Up to two children aged 15 and under, can travel for free in the same vehicle on all sailings to and from France this spring. The deal starts on Easter Saturday (31 March), so is perfectly timed for the school holidays. With a choice of morning and afternoon departures there’s sure to be a crossing from Portsmouth International Port that’s right for you.

The special offer can also be applied to mix and match routes, allowing you to sail into one port and out of another. It’s a great way of exploring France, allowing you to gently wend your way through beautiful Normandy, making the most of your time away.

Children will be delighted to know that their parents can pack as much into their car as is possible, maximising the chance of a major haul of chocolate eggs making their way across the channel. And unlike Easter treats that are packed into airline baggage, delicate eggs carried in the family vehicle are much more likely to survive the journey intact!

The French, of course, also celebrate Easter with chocolate eggs. But it’s the “Cloches de Pâques“ (Easter Bells) that are perhaps most memorable. Church bells fall silent in France on Good Friday to mark the death of Jesus Christ. Legend has it that they develop wings and fly to see the Pope in Rome. When they return on Easter Sunday to ring again they drop chocolate treats for the children, many shaped like little bells.

Visitors to Normandy may well want to experience another tradition this Easter, the charming Gais Lurons night carnival in the small town of Vitré. Within easy reach of the channel ports, this year’s festival concludes with a spectacular illuminated parade on Saturday 7 April, which just happens to mark the half-way point in most of the English school holidays.

The “kids go free deal” must be booked by 3 April, and is valid for travel from 31 March to 3 June 2018. That means it’s also applicable to May half term holidays as well, a great time to take advantage of warmer weather and beautiful empty beaches along the Normandy coastline.
